THE PATH TO PUBLISHING: HONE YOUR CRAFT!
During the summer of 2009 we had record-breaking attendance at our 47th Annual Conference, and provided more opportunities than at any previous annual conference to improve your writing and approach to your market, with 14 three-day, six one-day workshops, and two Master Classes.
CHECK BACK AFTER THE FIRST OF THE YEAR FOR INFORMATION ON THE 48TH CONFERENCE.
THE CAPE COD WRITERS CENTER IS ENTERING ITS 48TH YEAR!
For the past 47 years, during the third week in August,
Cape Cod Writers Center has drawn together writers at various levels of experience. Over the years this annual gathering has evolved
into a summer conference nationally recognized in professional
writers circles. It now offers courses in fiction,
creative nonfiction, poetry, screenwriting, editing,
and publishing. Literary agents and editors are in residence throughout the
week and with faculty conduct individual manuscript
evaluation/ mentoring
sessions.
Evening speakers programs, master classes,
and poetry and prose readings round out the experience. Since 1963, distinguished
speakers and faculty at the conference have included Kurt
Vonnegut, Jr., Mary Higgins Clark, Marge Piercy, Robert
Finch, Art Buchwald, Dennis Lehane, Claire Cook, Wes McNair, and Affa Michael Weaver, among others. For the 2008 conference Newsweek contributing editor and McLaughlin Group regular Eleanor Clift addressed the conference one evening; and David Godine, founder of David Godine Publisher, the award-winning Boston publishing house, spoke to us on another night and chaired our Master Class on publishing. For the 2009 conference, Marita Golden, founder of the Hurston-Wright Foundation, was among our keynote speakers, as well as Roger Sutton, editor-in-chief of The Horn Book; Martin Sandler Emmy-award winning writer; and David Kirkpatrick, co-founder of Plymouth Rock Studios.
A tuition-free weeklong Young Writers Workshop (see Young
Writers webpage ) offered during the conference accommodated
approximately 45 twelve to sixteen-year-olds, selected
competitively through submissions judged by a committee
of published writers.
The location of the conference has been a charming Victorian
village in the Craigville area of Centerville, overlooking
Nantucket Sound.

Craigville Conference Center, on a bluff
overlooking Nantucket Sound, has been the unique
setting for the Cape Cod Writers Center summer
conference for the past 46 years.
Charming Cape
Cod cottages, many on the National Historic Register,
and an historic post office, inn, and Tabernacle
encircle the classic green, or small park, of
the original 1871 church campground from which
the village evolved.
Four inviting guest houses (Manor, Lodge, Seaside
and Inn) serve as lodging and classrooms with
views of fresh water ponds and marshes, and Craigville's
world-famous ocean beach.
Two books by Marion R. Vuilleumier, founder of
the Cape Cod Writers' Center, capture the rich
history of the village: Cape Cod's Craigville and Craigville Now and Then.
